sunday inspiration #10: orange.

Happy Sunday! I've had a busy but awesome day: ran a 4 mile race, had a delicious brunch, got to see a good amount of my family members, took a nap, had a good trip to the thrift store, and a good trip to Ulta that didn't cost more than $20! So yay for that!

Katie & I decided to do orange for today (bonus points to anyone who can guess what color we're going to do next!).

cool things of the week #21

Happy Thursday! Here are a few awesome things I've found lately.

I kind of like this idea—a virtual or printed die that will give you generic creative advice when you need some art direction. It may not always apply to each project, but it's an interesting idea.

Illustrator Sam Kalda's latest project is depictions of famous creatives and their cats—I love the idea of this and also the variety of styles Kalda uses—including some hand lettering.

I love love love this article by Kaarin from True to Style—inspired by an article on style skills you have to master, she took into a more positive light, and focused instead on more long lasting style lessons that really have more to do with self confidence and life skills than fashion.

Reasons why I love Adobe: creating technology to encourage everyone to be creative and draw, and not think that doodling has to stop after childhood. I also would love to get my hands on the new Slide and Ink for the ipad.

This is a really interesting first hand account of how three photographers sneak into (usually abandoned) facilities that were used by the military during the Cold War. It's really interesting to get a peek into their process and the reasons they risk their 'day jobs' to pursue this hobby.

Oh my god, I cannot get over the cuteness that is Frostie the Snow Goat. Frostie overcame a lot of obstacles, including a debilitating disease that prevented him from walking. After he was outfitted with a special set of wheels that allowed him to run around, he was able to walk on his own! Sadly, I read today that Frostie died a few days ago from complications. So, so sad.

ways to go.

I've been slacking on posting lately, so here is a much delayed outfit post!

What I'm wearing:
Dress: Old Navy
Necklace: Francesca's Collections
Flats: DSW

I wore this with my good ole black blazer for work, but it was just too hot & humid outside to keep it on for outfit photos. I tried to take a good closeup of my makeup but it didn't turn out as well as I wanted—I used a few of the shades from Lorac's AfterGLO palette (sadly, Lorac is not cruelty free) which is a really good summer palette. The liner is the cream eyeliner from e.l.f. which is the best low cost makeup basically ever (and available at Target!). I went back to Target and bought a few more things from their line today—so far I've been really impressed.

I'm in love with the song "Ways to Go" by Grouplove—definitely listen to it if you haven't heard it.

casual floral.

I love when I get an idea for an outfit that I'm not quite sure will work, but then it works out even better than I planned. This outfit was one of those.

Photos by my fiancee.

What I'm wearing:
Shirt: Old Navy
Skirt: vintage
Shoes: Keds, gift
Necklace: Urban Outfitters (old)

I wore this last Sunday when we had my fiancee's parents over for Father's Day and made a big lunch for them, which was a lot of fun. This outfit felt like the perfect mix of casual with a little fancy (the fancy being the vintage skirt).

bows & points.

Maybe it's the summer, but I've been wearing a lot of coral lately. I'm normally pretty drawn to it, but it seems like I've been wearing it more recently lately. So, here's some more.

What I'm wearing:
Top: TJ Maxx
Skirt: thrifted
Shoes: Crown Vintage via DSW
Necklace: gift from Katie

I've had this top for a long time but for some reason it's never made it onto the blog before now. It was a total impulse purchase because I saw coral, lace and an inexpensive price and made a beeline for it.

But these shoes—I languished over these shoes. I had had them in my wishlist for a while and then they went on clearance and even then I had a huge debate about whether or not to buy them. But I finally caved—and despite the day one blisters (ugh), I'm glad I did.

sunday inspiration #9: dark pink

This weekend flew by, yet again. I hope everyone had a nice Father's Day weekend!

So the color Katie & I decided on for today doesn't really have a specific name (it's Pantone 191 C if you're curious), because it's like a dark salmon or coral, but not quite a fuschia or magenta. So I think it's just best to call it dark pink.

coral + floral.

I will totally own up to the fact that by the time we took these pictures, my arms had pretty much turned the color of my dress (PSA: don't sit outside at a coffee shop not completely under the umbrella if you don't have sunscreen on). But let's pretend you can't entirely tell.

What I'm wearing:
Dress: Old Navy—currently on sale!
Necklace: Target
Shoes: Keds (gift)

Apparently I love this color so much I wanted to match it.
Anyways, this was just a casual Sunday outfit to meet some friends & chop away at my to do list.

Have a great week! (And always wear sunscreen.)

cobalt + silver.

One of the best things about summer is that I can go back to my sleeveless dress + sweater routine for my work outfits. I've been really drawn to this cut on dresses lately, which is great because it seems to be pretty popular—it's like a variation on the classic sheath.

060214x1 060214x2 060214x3
What I'm wearing:
Sweater: Target
Dress: Madewell (link)
Shoes: Seychelles, swapped from Hannah
Necklace: Etsy (shop now closed)

I don't normally shop at Madewell a whole lot (mostly because the prices can be a bit much for my bank account) but my mom had gotten me a dress for my birthday that didn't work out so I went in to make the exchange and found this beautiful blue dress! I'm really liking cobalt lately and discovering it's a good color to have in my wardrobe. Bonus, I had enough money leftover from the exchange to buy a few cute accessories!

And these shoes—honestly, they're a little big on me (but hey, that's what inserts are for, right?) but I couldn't let them go to the donation pile (well, Hannah's donation pile) without giving them a little more wear. They're just so unique.

sunday inspiration #8: white.

Happy Sunday! I'm obviously running a little behind today—I had a massive to do list for this weekend which I'm still trying to chip away at in between seeing friends (I got to see both Katie & Hannah today!) and spending some time with my fiancee. So this weekend has gone by all too quickly.

Katie & I decided to do white today!

cool things of the week #20

Happy Thursday! This week has flown by. And I found so many cool things this week!

This is just such a sweet, amazing story. This 9 year old boy has a dream of starting a no kill animal shelter, and he's already starting to accomplish it. Really great & heartwarming.

This is a really interesting—but also scary—article that I think everyone in today's day & age need to read. It's really scary how much this daily usage of technology has degraded our memories. The sheer amount of information available these days is just too much for your memory capacity to handle. Really interesting facts.

It's a live infographic! I can't even get over how cool this is.

An app that lets you interact with your cat! And you can remotely feed them treats. I would have entirely too much fun with this. And they have a Kickstarter project.

I love that new technologies are able to help disabled animals like this. This goat is so cute, and obviously so happy to be able to move around again. Oh, and there's a video!

Katie from Today I Want has inspired me to really look into which of my favorite cosmetic brands are cruelty free, and to focus on buying cruelty free cosmetic brands from now on. And this is a great list to start with.

Kittens! In cute costumes! Go look.

I just realized that this was a very animal-centric Cool Things of the Week. Because animals are awesome.
