Guest post from Hannah of She Could Be A Pharmer

Thanks to my blogger BFF Hannah for guest posting! Go check out her blog!

Hello lovelies! I'm Hannah and I write the blog she could be a pharmer in those clothes. Since G is taking a much deserved vacay on the beach, I thought it's be nice to share my favorite things about summer.

I grew up in Colorado, so going to the beach was never really in my summer repertoire. None of my friends growing up had pools (what jerks), so even going to the local community pool was a big deal. I spent most of my summers lounging in the back yard, drinking diet coke, and reading a good book. To me, nothing says summer like reading. When I was younger, I obviously read a lot during the school year for class. But reading in the summer was always different - I could read whatever I want! The summer before my freshman year of high school I read thirteen books (yes, I am still oddly proud of this) - they ranged from Stephen King's The Dark Half to Alexandre Dumas' The Count of Monte Cristo to frivolous romance novels.

Sadly, as I've grown up I've lost diversity in my reading. As a graduate student, I can't help feeling obliged to read papers for school (lame). When I do pick up a book, 90% of the time it is science non-fiction. Don't get me wrong, I love science books! The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is one of the best books I have read in a long time. But I miss the indulgent, summer read. Somehow I have become horrible at picking books! I go to the bookstore, get completely overwhelmed by tons of options, and end up buying the book with the coolest cover. Yep, I'm that person.

Stephen King fan girl for life!
If any of you have a recommendation for a good book I would be so grateful! I'm heading on a little vacation of my own soon (Vegas for a friend's bachelorette party), and I need to pick up a few novels before I go. Since I'm not much for clubs or gambling, I'm most looking forward to quality pool time with a good book. Add on a cute swimsuit, floppy hat, over-the-top sunnies, and a margarita and I'm in heaven!

Summer time
Don't forget the sunscreen!
Thanks for reading my guest post! And everyone make sure to congratulate G for graduating college and scoring a kick-ass job!

Guest post from Lara of the Glossarie

Thanks to beauty blogger & guru Lara (one of the first DC bloggers I met!) for doing a post on summer beauty!

Hi Tulle & Combat Boots friends! I'm Lara from The Glossarie and as the darling Gina celebrates her graduation in the Outer Banks of NC, I'm thrilled to be here with you chatting about one of my favorite subjects this time of year - poolside pretty. Memorial Day is creeping up on us and my neighborhood pool is looking just a little bit more inviting each day. My favorite poolside clutch from Stephanie Johnson is all packed and ready to go with my favorite summertime makeup essentials. Take a peek inside!

1. Stephanie Johnson Farrah Tassel Clutch, $48: Natural raffia trimmed in leafy lime green is lightweight and carefree - the perfect place to stash my beauty basics and so fun for taking out on the town after a day in the waves.

2. Tarte LipSurgence in Spirited, $24: This plumping stain gives enough polish to still be poolside appropriate and the natural flush it leaves behind stays all day.

3. Murad Oil-Free Sunblock SPF 30, $31: There is no price too high for an oil-free sunblock that won't block my pores or break me out. Murad has blended the perfect amount of sun care and protection and hit true beauty gold with this featherweight, hydrating, and super effective SPF.

4. Bumble and Bumble Color Minded UV Protective Styling Balm, $28: After a good cooling and chlorine-saturated head dunk, my baby fine hair is aching for some moisture. This hair cream de-tangles and gives subtle shine while nourishing and minimizing fading effects.

5. Sonia Kashuk Fairy Princess, $4.79: Sweet mint-colored nails are going to be my summer uniform. Sonia Kashuk does the shade justice with her high shine, chip resistant formula at a bargain price.

6. Urban Decay Cannonball Ultra Waterproof Mascara, $20: I love a lot of lash and fun in the sun is no exception to the rule. This ultimate in splash-proof mascaras is gel-based making it lightweight (ie you won't feel it like you do with other waterproof mascaras) and super natural looking.

7. Marc by Marc Jacobs Round Tortoise Sunglasses, $110: Sunglasses do double duty by the pool, protecting your precious peepers from sun damage and the deepening lines you get from squinting while also keeping you looking very stylish.

Guest post from Alison of Wardrobe Oxygen

The first guest post is from my friend Alison of Wardrobe Oxygen, who is a great blogger and just an awesome person. Thanks to her for this great post!

Hi, my name is Alison and I blog over at Wardrobe Oxygen.  When G of Tulle & Combat Boots asked me to guest post on Summer, I jumped at the chance.  All winter long, I wait for summer.  Warmer weather, bright days… and music festivals!  For the past several years I have attended the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Tennessee and it’s the highlight of each summer.

For those who haven’t heard of it, Bonnaroo is one of the biggest music festivals in the United States.  Around 80,000 people attend to see art, comedy, movies, and over 100 different bands and musical artists across all genres.

While some stay in hotels and local yokels may get day passes, the majority of the attendees camp on the festival grounds, otherwise known as The Farm.  I am not a camper, yet each year I stay in a tent in the blazing Tennessee heat living without electricity or bathrooms.  Over time we have mastered camping – we know to put a silver tarp on the east side of our tent, to bring a poncho and pair of rain boots, and how to make well water from a spigot become a makeshift shower.  Each year I say I won’t do it again, but come the next January I’m buying Bonnaroo tickets!

Why do I do it?  Because there is no similar experience on this earth.  I don’t know if it’s the heat, the dirt, or the arepas, but the experience helps complete strangers work together, get along, and enjoy their common interest – a passion for music.  One camping neighbor may be there for the Country headliner, another for the Metal band playing Friday night, another is there purely for the Electronica late-night sets; all are there for the love of music.  Some of the best shows of my entire life have been at Bonnaroo – I went while pregnant and saw My Morning Jacket in a rainshower and Kanye West play during sunrise.  Seeing Galactic late night in 2010 was one of the craziest experiences ever.  I got to see the fabulous Beth Ditto and The Gossip and Robyn up close and personal, and am honored to have seen The White Stripes while they were still together.

Not only do I find my secret super camper in my soul, but I also find the hidden hippie in my heart.  While I spend the workday in pencil skirts and pumps, come Bonnaroo time out comes the floral sundresses, bandannas, and tie dye.  Bonnaroo is a place to let the freak flag fly, be it wearing a tutu and rainbow knee socks or a body suit made completely of glo-sticks.  One of the best parts of Bonnaroo is the people watching – seeing how they react to the music, and how they choose to dress for the experience

Have you ever been to a summer music festival?  What is your favorite part of the experience?

Thanks again!

-Alison

graduation & vacation!

Hello lovelies!

So, I graduate from college today! I will be getting my Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design, and then heading to the Outer Banks for a week long vacation! Did I mention I'm excited? Because I totally am! :D

But fear not, I have some awesome guest posts lined up as well as a few scheduled posts from yours truly.

Have a great week, and enjoy the guest posts!

(Sorry for all the exclamation points. Too much excitement.)

summer chevrons.

Sorry for all the quiet on here lately! This past week has been crazy (yeah, yeah, I know — the past 6 months should just be labeled "constantly crazy weeks"), but for different reasons than usual.

I've been going back and forth between home (Maryland) and school (northern Virginia) all week, in the process of moving out of my dorm (for the last time ever!) and spending time with friends who I will be graduating with on Sunday. So Thursday night was spent attending a fancy "welcome to the alumni association party" with friends (followed by cookie dough & a movie, much more our style), and yesterday was moving everything out of my dorm with just two people (myself included)—and that felt like forever, because I somehow managed to amass quite a lot of stuff (shocker). And then the usually hour and 15 minute drive home took three hours (damn Friday rush hour traffic!). So I'm exhausted, and this morning I am driving back to school for more shenanigans. But I'm excited for the event this evening—the Awards Ceremony! I will be receiving some special graduation regalia from the Honors Program (let's call it thesis compensation, haha), and possibly another award! But I don't want to jinx myself.

Anyways! Here is what I wore last weekend when my boyfriend and I went to DC101's Chili Cook Off (basically a music festival under the guise of chili, for those unfamiliar).
Photos by my boyfriend.

I'm wearing:
Shirt: Old Navy
Dress: Target
Shoes: Converse
Bag: Cath Kidston, gift
Necklace: Urban Outfitters
Sunglasses: Urban Outfitters

This dress is basically the perfect summer dress: just trendy enough (chevrons & fishtail hem), comfortable (jersey-like cotton, and cut well), and cute (am I biased in that?). And it was only $25 at Target. Well done, Target, well done. Although we didn't stay at the cook-off very long, I'm glad I got to wear this outfit out, and it was a good choice for the day.

Sidenote: I managed to fit my rolled up shirt into my bag later in the day. I love secretly big bags that look small.

Have a great Saturday!

mint & coral.

Apologies for the quiet, yet again. Last Thursday was my 22nd birthday, and it was an awesome day. I got so many sweet birthday wishes, and the best birthday present ever was that I found out I got a job! It's exactly what I want, and I'm so excited. And I felt that since it was my birthday, I feel like I had the right to look a little bit ridiculous. Or just uber-cutesy.

I'm wearing:
Cardigan: Land's End
Dress: Forever 21, thrifted
Tights: We Love Colors
Shoes: Shelly's of London
Scarf: Shop in Oxford
Earrings: gift
Necklace: gift
Headband: Topshop

I love these shoes, so much. And I love all occasions in which I get to wear my flower crown headband.

And I graduate in less than a week! Right after the ceremony my boyfriend and I are heading down to the Outer Banks for a week-long vacation, but fear not, I have some awesome guest posts lined up!
And I have a bunch of outfit photos on my camera waiting to be posted, so I'll post those before I leave town.

a little bit hipster, a little bit 80s.

So I've been a terrible blogger lately because real life has been crazy. But I am done with college! Completely done! I can't believe it; my thesis is completely done, I had my only final last night, and I just turned in my last class project.

Anyways, here's a much delayed outfit post.
Photos by my boyfriend.
I'm wearing:
Jacket: Forever 21
Shirt: Urban Outfitters
T-shirt: Threadless
Jeans: Urban Outfitters
Shoes: DSW
Scarf: Urban Outfitters
Necklace: Pretty People Vintage

This is another one of those accidentally overpowered by Urban Outfitters outfits. And it was very much inspired by Alison Mosshart, who will forever be one of my style idols.

Also, how beautiful are all these buttercups?! The backyard of my boyfriend's house is in much need of a trim, but it's currently overgrown with buttercups and it's perfect for spring.

Only two days til my birthday, and 12 days until graduation!

Have a great rest of the week!
