comeback kid.

In case you couldn't tell from the title, I'm obsessed with the new Sleigh Bells song, "Comeback Kid." Sooo good.

I hope everyone had a great weekend! I had a pretty busy but awesome weekend. On Saturday I got to hang out with my favorite guy friends and we went to see Lamb of God, which I was also photographing. I finally got to try out my new zoom lens! Now I have about 400 photos to go through, eep. Sunday was relaxing and lots of Lord of the Rings watching. I love that I don't have class until 6:30 in the evening on Mondays, it makes my weekend feel just a little bit longer.

I'm wearing:
Sweater: thrifted
Skirt: American Apparel
Tights: Topshop(?)
Shoes: Anthropologie, gift
Belt: Oasis
Necklace: Urban Outfitters

I kind of like how some of these photos are just a little bit out of focus, that in combination with the lighting makes it look very ethereal, which I like. I also did not take photos outside because I didn't want to get mud on my schnazzy new boots. It had rained torrentially that morning (as I was walking to work, of course) and I knew my usual photo spot would not be a good environment for my shoes. And I'm obviously not used to having my hair this long, because I keep putting it up in a teeny tiny bun so it's off of my neck. But I kind of like the way it looks, so there's that.

Have a great week!

pink roses.

Yesterday was a crazy busy day, so I didn't have time to post outfit photos. But I really like how this outfit turned out. Also, I really need to work on smiling when I take my own outfit photos.
I'm wearing:
Sweater: ASOS
Blouse: Urban Outfitters
Belt: Threadcase
Skirt: Express
Shoes: Born Concept / DSW
Pin: was my mom's

This is one of very few times when I didn't wear a necklace, because I figured with the collar and the sweater it would have been too much. So I decided to add one of my cat pins (which unfortunately I hardly ever wear, I need to fix that) that used to be my mom's.

I love how this outfit turned out, and even though it's a bit different from my usual style (but not by much, I suppose) I think it's important to play around with different styles. Just like in design, things get boring if you do everything in one style. And changing it up is fun. Also, I love this outfit because it made my waist look smaller, haha. The last time I wore this sweater I actually wore it with the same skirt; the two just work well together.

Do you have any two pieces that just go so well together you can't wear one without the other?

Have a great rest of the week; it's almost Friday!

collars, baubles, & broken shoes.

Hello lovely followers! So, I'm a little obsessed with collared shirts lately. Particularly when they're totally buttoned and surrounded by jewelry, which obviously inspired today's outfit.

(Sorry for the lame indoor pictures, time & daylight got away from me today.)
I'm wearing:
Blouse: Forever 21
Shirt: Uniqlo
Skirt: Nordstrom, gift
Shoes: thrifted
Necklace: Urban Outfitters
Rings: school ring, gift, vintage

My hair probably looks a little different—this past weekend I was supposed to have it cut but because of the whole ice & snow shenanigans, my hairdresser cancelled, and I ended up trimming my bangs myself (which I had never done before, if you can believe it). I'm actually pretty pleased with how they came out, for now at least.

Also, I have a dilemma. As I was leaving for my internship this morning I realized that something was not right with my shoes...
As you can see, the sole is coming off of the one shoe, pretty badly. My first thought was to gorilla glue it, but seeing as I thrifted these shoes for $5 about a year and a half ago and have more than gotten my money's worth, I'm thinking it might be time to retire them. Although they are the one pair of heels I own that I can comfortably wear and walk in for hours.

What do you guys think? Repair or retire?

style inspiration: marion cotillard in midnight in paris

I haven't done a style inspiration post in a while, so here's a new one! When I watched Midnight in Paris a couple weeks ago, I fell in love with Marion Cotillard's character and her costumes—they're so beautiful!

(All images from Google Images.)

I am in love with that white dress with the red trim—it's absolutely gorgeous!
And I highly recommend Midnight in Paris, it's a great film with a wonderful cast.

Have a great rest of the weekend (what's left of it)!

winter hipster.

Hello all!
So, the Internet's been busy. In case you somehow missed it, yesterday multiple sites blacked out in protest of SOPA/PIPA (google it if you don't know what it is), and today there was the Megaupload takedown. If you haven't already contacted your representative or signed a petition (if you're in the US), please do so here.

Now, onto your regularly scheduled outfit post.
I'm wearing:
Coat: Pins & Needles / Urban Outfitters
Plaid shirt: UO
Band t-shirt: We Are Scientists concert
Skirt: Old Navy
Tights: no idea
Socks: Gap (I think)
Hat: no idea

As I was editing these photos I started thinking about Mackenzie's post on what makes an outfit blogworthy. And you know what, if I want to wear a band t-shirt and a skirt and add in ye old hipster plaid shirt and call it one of my favorite outfits, then I'm going to. And I feel like that's one of the things that sets me and a few others apart, because a lot of fashion bloggers (especially in DC, I feel) are always prancing around in heels and posing around in the city like they're celebrities and always wearing the same things in different colors. And that's not what my blog is about. Because sometimes my outfits are ridiculous, sometimes they're work appropriate, and sometimes it's just whatever I felt like wearing.

End soapbox. Also, it's cold (yeah, we're sissies over here in DC). So you get to see me bundled up! And don't let the hat fool you—I'm actually having a pretty awesome hair day.

Anyways, time to get going—I'm going out for dinner with a couple friends!

Have a great rest of the week!

velvet & roses.

I survived my first last day of my last semester, and the first day of my new internship! Huzzah! Although I have a cold (blerg), things have been moving right along. I'm really excited about my new internship, and I just had my only class of the whole week! (I have a Monday night class that doesn't start until next week.) So things are going well. Anyways, outfit post! This is what I wore the Saturday before last, for hanging out with my boyfriend & then going into DC at night with Hannah & Mackenzie (fun times were had, as always!).
Photos by my boyfriend.
I'm wearing:
Dress: thrifted, altered
Leggings: Old Navy
Boots: shop in Oxford
Scarf: Urban Outfitters
Necklace: antique
Belt: Oasis

I found this dress in the 'vintage' section of the local thrift store, and it screamed nineties. There was an attached choker, which I of course got rid of, along with the shoulderpads. There's still a few more alterations to do, but for now it is much improved. It's super comfortable and I found it right as I was searching for something velvet to add to my wardrobe. And, it has a swishy skirt! Always a plus.

The necklace I got at my favorite antique shop near home, and the owner actually gifted it to me (whenever I make large purchases she always gives me something little as "my present," she's the sweestest). It's on a velvety ribbon, so it went perfectly with the dress.

Now time for me to go crawl into bed with some movies and NyQuil.
Have a great week!

jewel tones.

Prepare yourself for ridiculousness. No, really, I am proud of how ridiculous and bright and kind of awesome this outfit is.

Without further ado...
I'm wearing:
Coat: BB Dakota via Fancy French Cologne
Dress: Ann Taylor, gift
Collar: ASOS
Necklace: gift
Boots: Anthropologie, gift

I had begun planning this outfit since I got this dress and I ordered this collar. I love how the jewel tones worked out perfectly: the teal, cobalt, and violet go together quite nicely I think. My friend Katie had originally ordered this necklace for me as a Christmas present for the year before, and it didn't arrive until this past September so it worked out that it was my Christmas present this year! I absolutely love it. And I love how ridiculous the faux fur collar is—the fact that it was on sale sealed the deal. Oh and the boots! Not planned, but they have a teal upper part that adds to the jewel tones (another Christmas present)—I wish I had gotten a better shot of them.

I think I got some weird looks wearing this around the Smithsonian American Art Museum in DC, but it was fun. I decided to go with my red coat because my other coats looked weird with it, and I figured one more color couldn't hurt. I went to the museum with my stepmom and we had a great time wandering out. Their current main exhibit, Multiplicity, is amazing, and I highly recommend going if you're in the area (it's on view until early March). And we got crepes! Deliciousness.
A few photos from the day...

Tomorrow is my last day of work! On Tuesday I start my spring semester (my last one ever) and my new internship—I'm really excited about it.

Have a great weekend!
